The Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life

- Do you have a desire to grow in your relationship with God?
- Do you have a desire to live life at a deeper level?
- Are you seeking to understand more clearly God’s movements in your life?
- Ready to discern the next step in your life?
- Don't have the time to run off to a monastery until you figure it out?
The Spiritual Exercises grew out of St. Ignatius Loyola’s personal experience as a lay person seeking to grow in union with God and to discern God’s will. He kept a journal as he gained spiritual insight and deepened his spiritual experience. Eventually Ignatius gathered these prayers, meditations, reflections, and directions into a carefully designed framework of a journey which he called “spiritual exercises.”
For centuries these Exercises were most commonly given over a thirty-day period in solitude and silence. But Ignatius found that many people could not, because of family or business reasons, take thirty days off, leave home, and go away for a retreat. So he created an adaptation of the Exercises, which would be extended over a period of seven to eight months. This journey with the Lord helps us to grow in spiritual freedom and the ability to find intimacy with God in the midst of our everyday busy lives.
What Will Be Required of Me?
This is a pretty intense experience. You should already be engaged in regular prayer, and be comfortable using Scripture as part of your prayer. While not necessary, it is very helpful if you've had an experience making some form of retreat (e.g. weekend) as well as some experience with ongoing spiritual direction. At the very least, you should be comfortable in talking about your experiences in prayer.
The retreat requires a commitment of approximately an hour a day to prayer for about 30 weeks, as well as a weekly meeting (about an hour) with me via phone, Skype, or in person (Houston area). Because of this time commitment, I am able to accept only a limited number of individuals for this retreat at any given time.
What Is My Investment?
The total cost for the retreat is $750. There is a $50 refundable application fee. Once an individual has completed the application process, and if accepted for the retreat, a $100 non-refundable deposit is required. Both the application fee and deposit ($150) are applicable to the total cost of the retreat. The remaining balance ($600) is due by the 6th meeting unless other arrangements have been made.
